I can’t explain for the title of this post except for the fact that in the comic above Jason mentions the “Death Star” and it led me think about that line. I digress.
I find it interesting how much Oprah seems to be swayed by public opinion. When she thought that Frey’s memoir was a true story she supported it, pointing out how helpful it had been to countless individuals struggling with alcoholism and drug abuse (which it obviously has been.) Then the poo-poo hit the leaf-blower and everyone was talking about how Frey had made up rather significant events in his memoirs. At that point Oprah said she didn’t care, that it was still “emotionally true.” Now recently there has been a public outcry for Oprah defending Frey simply because his faction (fact mixed with fiction) book had helped people. Oprah, apparently after seeing her public approval ratings drop, has been backreeling saying, “I really feel duped” and “To everyone who has challenged me on this issue of truth, you are absolutely right.” Well, on one hand it’s good to see Oprah facing the music, on the other hand it’s interesting how Oprah seems to be swayed so much by public opinion. But then again, that’s all she really does on her talk show (and subsequently why I think she’s so popular,) she tells people what they want to hear.
