UPDATE:
Well folks, that’s about it for this installment of “live update.” I’ll be making some minor tweaks here and there as usual but I’m extremely satisfied with the overall style I’ve got here now.
UPDATE 9:10PM: OK, so here’s the deal, look at my footer. Go ahead, look. You see where I got this design from? I asked Matt for permission to use his header. I wish to God I was as creative and could make something original but I can’t. I sit and think and code and draw in Photoshop and guess what, I’m just not as good as these guys (Matt) yet. So I use their stuff on my blog. I’m sorry if I’ve disappointed any of you by this, but rest assured Matt knows full well what I’ve done and he told me I could use his style. Trust me, I feel crappy knowing that I can’t even come up with my own freakin’ original designs.
Sorry for the vent folks, I’ve had a bad night at church and I come back to people emailing me and ripping into me for having a blog design that (God forbid) looks similar to someone else’s. Show me a design that’s COMPLETELY original and I’ll show you that there’s no such thing. Everyone has been inspired by a design, most bloggers are just using a template with no customization at all. I on the other hand, have hacked up the code in K2 so flippin’ much it’s not even funny. I hacked up the loop.php, sidebar, archives, single post, etc etc etc. I’ve moved the comments, tags and categories to the bottom of the post. I’ve put an image at the bottom of each post to separate it from the next. I’ve figured out how to style the date next to the post title and now people are asking me how to do it. Matt Bator even asked me, and he’s a GREAT designer, I envy some of the things he’s done on his blog. So, I told him how to do it and he’s using that style on his blog. I don’t mind at all either. No one is emailing him though, telling him “hey, Open Switch has that exact same style!” Then I helped a friend of mine, Scott, with his bottombar. Heck, I EMAILED HIM MY CODE, exact code. He has taken what I gave him and completely made it his own. He’s changed it to fit his blog and it LOOKS GREAT. But no one is complaining about him and his design. So here I am, for the first time I asked another person if I could use their style, which I’ve tweaked slightly to fit my blog, and they said yes and I’m getting ripped for it. That’s just not right. I’m getting so sick of trying to do something original. That’s why I’ve just decided to do something unoriginal that I like. Is that so wrong?
