How to Ruin a Vacation

thermometerVacations are great. Especially when it will be spent in the presence of family. There’s precious little that can ruin a vacation of this type for me. Unfortunately I’ve found one thing that does ruin it: contracting the flu 3 days in to your 7 day vacation and spend more than half your vacation shivering on your parents couch with a high fever watching marathon Dumbo because your two year old son is ADDICTED to it and insists that it be played over and over again.

Graeme, you needn’t be jealous anymore. ;)

Teen Goes Nuclear

17 year old teen goes nuclear, creating fusion in his parent’s basement. He is now the 18th amateur in history to create nuclear fusion.

Social Truth Dot Com Comes Back

Social Truth dot com has come back to the blog-o-sphere. In its previous iteration it was a very great site, very encouraging and fun but unfortunately dropped off the map several months ago. I’m sure Matt and crew have some excellent stuff planned for the re-release.

9rules Color Scheme

Just found a color scheme inspired by the 9rules leaf. Sweet.

Happy Thanksgiving

Just wanted to drop a quick note wishing everyone a very happy Thanksgiving. May you eat much, sleep after and enjoy some football ;).

Podcast Production

Podcasting is an addiction. Really, it is. I’d love to get into some roundtable type podcasts and I’d also like to get better equipment. I’m not sure where to start but here’s an entry about producing quality podcasts that looks very promising.

Blog Self-Promotion via Social Bookmarking

In a recent note on 9rules a fine fellow who goes by JustinKistner asked the community what we thought about blog self-promotion.

I can respect what Justin says and do actually agree that some level of self-promotion is a good thing in the blog-oh-sphere. However, when I read what he said regarding submitting his own entries to social bookmarking sites:

I also started signing up for every social bookmarking service I could so I could submit my postings to get them in the space

I couldn’t help but disagree and responded in a different note he created:

I think I hear what you’re saying, Justin. And I can’t condemn you for promoting your blog, either personal or professional. I know that I promote my blog in ways as well (I’m in 9rules, right?) Promotion isn’t really the issue in my mind, it’s how one promotes their blog. Submitting your own entries to social bookmarking sites seems silly to me because even though it gets the job done (your blog is indeed promoted) it goes about it by using a service in a way other than intended. Now, I say “other than intended” and I really only mean, “What I perceive as its intended use.”

So the argument could be made that what I see as a site who’s existence is for people to tell others “Hey, look at this cool site I found” as with del.icio.us you may see it as a means to an end and nothing more. From that viewpoint I’d have no argument.

But I think that the use of a site like del.icio.us or Digg or whatever to submit your own posts to is narcissistic. I’m old fashioned that way I guess. ;) An old fuddy duddy. Then again, I’ve always been a huge fan of organic growth rather than forced growth. Organic growth seems to have more staying power. I may be wrong in what I think but that is, in fact, what I think.

It’s interesting to see how other people view social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us and Digg. I’m not saying that I think JustinKistner is evil or unintelligent, quite the contrary, he’s making the system work for him. I just disagree on matter of principle.

But this all makes me very curious, what do you think about blog self-promotion and how do you promote your blog?

Idol or Distraction?

Shawn of The Fight Spot has a good post that relates to something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately: what’s the difference between an idol and a distraction?

Has Dawkins Jumped the Shark?

Has Dawkins jumped the shark? This post from Macht leads me to think so. Really it just reinforces my own political strategy: if people who hate you like to run their mouths, let them. Eventually they’ll dig their own grave.

Going Home

earmuffsThis week I’m visiting family for Thanksgiving, staying at my parent’s house; hopefully you’re able to spend this season with family as well. My heart goes out to those military personell who can’t be with their loved ones this time of year.

I find it interesting that when I go home I feel 18 again. I’m a 27 year old man, so why does being in my parents house make me feel like I just graduated from high school? It’s not my parent’s fault, they treat me like a grown man. It’s not like they’re acting as if I couldn’t vote or anything. I think it has more to do with me growing up in this house. I basically moved out when I was 18 to go to college in Georgia and haven’t lived here since so maybe that’s why I feel this way. It’s a very odd feeling.

Am I the only one that feels this way when they spend time at their parent’s house? Surly I can’t be the only one!

Cat’s Meows

The truth behind cat’s meows is that they simply can’t communicate with us any other way o_O. Didn’t … I … already know that? ;) (clicky)

Changes Worth Noting

chalkTypically I don’t note every change I make on Open Switch as most of them are minor and negligible. But when I make a change that involved the work of someone else I do like to give credit where it’s due. This week’s change — that’s tongue in cheek, mind you — involves my Archives page which is meant to emulate Kottke’s Archives and is made possible in part by this nifty plugin which is titled, ironically, “Kottke Style Archives.” What can I say? I stalk Kottke.

This isn’t the first thing Kottke has done that I’ve emulated; he was a factor in me hacking inline asides into Cutline as well. It does bear mentioning, however, that Kottke is running Movable Type on his blog and I’m using WordPress. So … even if I wanted to rip his code — which I don’t — it’s simply not possible. All the coding has to be done independently. Except, of course, for that list of years and months you see on my Archives page which as I mentioned is produced by that plugin.

“That crap is like medieval alchemy … turning lead into gold and stuff”

I’m sure there’s some php whiz out there that could manage a list like that without a plugin but I’ve already bugged the 1337 9rulers enough as it is regarding php hackery. CSS and HTML are a breeze for me compared to php; and I’m not talking about WordPress Template Tags, those are easy. I’m talking about the complex stuff like you see in K2. That crap is like medieval alchemy … turning lead into gold and stuff.

Other sites that have inspired this most recent rendition of Open Switch include but are not limited to: Challies, Photomatt, Kottke (previously linked) and Pearsonified.

Church Branding

Out of Ur has a great post titled: Burned by Branding. It discusses what churches can learn from the anti-Starbucks movement.

On Vacation

Just a heads up, I’m on vacation in Chicago this week so posting will be sporadic and sparse. Is that repetitively redundant?

Three Things

I just finished a marathon of responding to the dozens of comments here after driving 12 hours from Atlanta to Chicago to visit my parents. Thank you all for your great thoughts on the many different issues. A few things caught my eye today on this site: I’m someone’s favorite Christian blogger o_O, I frustrated a friend by forgetting to add her back into my blogroll (sorry Hannah :(), and last but not least someone purchased a link on my blog that links to … my feed o_O.
