Another Day, Another Redesign

Don’t fret. I’ve still got the previous design for anyone who wants it. ;) I’ll be cleaning up the code and releasing it in the not-so-far-and-distant-future.

There are still a few bugs to squash with this design, hopefully it won’t take too terribly long. The biggest one right now is styling the comment form. Unfortunately I’m just completely swamped with work so that’ll probably have to wait for a little while. Hope you don’t mind.

You shouldn’t notice any hiccups in the feed, if you do please let me know.

Some goals of mine were:

  1. Looks good at any screen resolution
  2. Minimalistic design
  3. Front page is a kind of hub for the rest of the site

I think for the most part these goals have been accomplished.

Dude, this is awesome. Man I can’t wait until I am as good as you are!

  2. - November 6, 2007

    Meh, it’s nothing really. ;)

I opened Bloglines and saw 10 new entries from Openswitch, and thought to myself…….“I bet Ben has switched back to Textpattern”….hehehe. Anyway, the design looks nice.

    And you were right! LOL

Dang! I was finally getting used to the other new design. :-) Great work Ben…and I agree with Nick…I want to be like you when I grow up! BTW, put me on the list of those anxiously awaiting the release of your previous wordpress theme.

Wow. I just noticed the switch back to textpattern.

@Tracy: Yeah, I’m going to write up a post explaining the pros and cons of each CMS. Well, at least of WordPress and Textpattern. Textpattern was a perfect fit for this design and structure. I could have done it in WordPress but in my opinion it would have been squeezing a square peg into a round hole.

You forgot to mention your 4th goal: “Redesign my site more than any other blogger, ever.”

Ben, congrats for the brand new design, it’s awsome – as usual. I am experiencing problems with the feed, however, and Feedburner says it’s not just me. Here’s the error message from the feed’s site:

    HTTP Error Code: 500

Detail: There was a problem retrieving the feed: com.burningdoor.rsspp.resource.impl.HttpConnectionException: Error getting URL: 400 – Recursive feed redirection error: Are requests for your ‘Original Feed’ address — the feed that FeedBurner is checking for updates — being redirected to your FeedBurner feed? Make sure your Original Feed is provided from a web address that isn’t redirected to FeedBurner.

Thanks for the heads up, Zoltan. I’ll look into it.

Lovely indeed. It does remind me a bit of Depo Clean (which is a good thing)

  12. - November 7, 2007

Looking nice Ben. I wondered what was going on. Google Reader hadn’t updated your feed since 10/28. Glad I stopped by.

  13. - November 7, 2007

    @Vidar: Thanks :) . I agree, Depo Clean is a great theme.

@Will: Weird. I use Google reader too and I’m subscribed to my own feed. It was updating just fine for me. Very odd.

  14. - November 7, 2007

@Shawn: LOL. Yeah man, you got that right. I think I’m done redesigning for a while though.

  15. - November 7, 2007

I subscribed again and now it works fine for me too ;-)

I miss the subscribe to comments though. Does TXP have something similar?

OK, great. The best I could do with textpattern is a comment feed for each individual post. Is that something you could use?

    2 nights ago….

I was talking to you about how im liking your theme

    and now

    you have a new one????

this one is actually way better than the previous one

  18. - November 7, 2007

I loved the last one. Like really loved it. This is good but just soooo white. Though I’ll get used to it.

  20. - November 7, 2007

    Darn tootin’

  21. - November 8, 2007

And you removed the bg pattern… it looked kinda nice

  22. - November 8, 2007

I’ll consider that, Vidar. I just didn’t want the site to look too busy.

  23. - November 8, 2007

Hey, we look identical. You need to identify yourself as the owner of the site otherwise I could pose as you and wreck havok!

  24. - November 8, 2007

    Good point. :D

  25. - November 8, 2007

Yet another great design Ben, you just keep getting better! It certainly gets the thumbs up from me. I like the simplicity of it. What’s good is that it is simple, yet of a really high standard.

  26. - November 8, 2007

Ben, I like this design a lot! Keep with it and let it grow.

  27. - November 9, 2007

hehe… its worth visiting this site just once a week if only to see the new design. I love the constant state of redesign that you seem to live in, I wish I could find the time to do the same. I must say this theme has the same overall ‘feel’ that a new theme I’m working on has. Nice.

  28. - November 10, 2007

Ben, man, what is wrong with you? Seriously!

I thought I read a couple of months ago, that you weren’t going to redesign for a year. I think I’ve seen at least three since then.

It’s nice though, to your credit.

  29. - November 10, 2007

    It’s a sickness… really.

  30. - November 10, 2007

so its safe to say that you’re down with the sickness? :P

  31. - November 10, 2007

    Looks great! Like the simple!

  32. - November 10, 2007

    @vidar: absolutely my friend! :)

    @Jeff: Thanks for the compliment.

  33. - November 15, 2007

I’ll take one copy of the previous “tumblr” design please! I loved it – was shocked to find it changed this morning (I’m a bit late here).

Always like your design changes by the way – very inspiring.

  34. - November 16, 2007

Thanks, Jim. It will definitely be released.
